Allergy. Some Facts about Them. |

Series
of injection is given to the patient in immunotherapy for years. It was known
as serum in the past and it is now called an allergy extract. Small amount of
antigen is included in the first shot or injection. The body can adjust
according to the antigen with increasing dosage and becomes less sensitive.
This process is known as desensitization. This process can change the natural
course of allergic disease. You can have long term benefits with three to five
years of injections. Immunotherapy cannot be effective for everyone but allergy
sufferers can stop or reduce medications.
How Do the
Allergy Shots Work?
Symptoms
cannot be treated with immunotherapy but it can treat immune system which is
source of allergic reactions. There can be allergic reactions when there is
foreign invasion to the immune system due to exposure. Antibody is produced by
the white blood cells called immunoglobulin E and this process is known as
sensitization. Certain chemicals mediators are released antigen meets antibody.
There can be allergic reactions due to these mediators. Immune response is
turned down by allergy shots to the antigen. There can be less production of
immunoglobulin E with immunotherapy. It will produce less severe allergic
reactions around affected areas like eyes and bronchial airways.
Can
Everybody Use It?
You
should consult certified allergist to know whether allergy shots are good for
you. You can have shots in case of severe allergic reactions. You can have hay
fever medications which are good for people with severe side effects. These
shots can be good for adults and children five years older. These shots are not
given to the people if they have asthma or heart problems. You should also
avoid shots if you are taking beta blockers and if you have high blood pressure
or if you are taking MAO inhibitors.
These
shots can reduce allergy symptoms like indoor allergy and seasonal allergic
rhinitis. Allergy shots are normally given for allergens only. You will be
asked about your medical history before shots by allergist. You will undergo
series of allergy tests which are helpful in determining allergy shots. These
tests will also determine bad reaction of the allergy tests. There are small
needles used in the immunotherapy which can cause discomfort. You will need to
show your patience with allergy shots as these shots are given in series over
time. It will take about six months initially and then maintenance therapy is
applied for three to five years. There can be improvement in symptoms in six to
twelve months. You should take booster shots after completion of first series.
You will need to show commitment if you are going to stop immunotherapy for
allergy reactions.
